Ziro, April 25, 2025 – In a significant public health initiative, the District Administration of Lower Subansiri, in collaboration with key medical institutions, distributed the test reports of the Gastric (Stomach) Cancer Epidemiology & Risk Study to 203 volunteers at Gyati Takka General Hospital (GTGH), Ziro. The screening, which took place from March 5 to 8, 2025, was conducted as part of an effort to understand and prevent gastric cancer in the Ziro Valley region.

Deputy Commissioner Shri Vivek HP, who led the distribution program, emphasized the growing health concerns among the younger population, particularly highlighting the excessive consumption of carbonated drinks such as Coke and Pepsi. He urged parents and guardians to promote healthier dietary habits among children and youths. The DC also raised concerns about the declining population of certain clans within the Apatani tribe, calling for collective action in preserving cultural identity and encouraging community participation in health initiatives. He encouraged the participants to not only follow the medical advice given but also to motivate their family members and friends to engage with ongoing and future screenings.
Dr. B.B. Borthakur, Director of Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati, provided an overview of the test results. Out of the 203 individuals screened, 51 were identified as high risk, 70 as moderate risk, and 82 as nominal risk for developing stomach cancer. Dr. Borthakur explained that multiple risk factors contribute to gastric cancer, including dietary habits and environmental influences. He appealed to the participants for continued cooperation over the coming years so that the research team can monitor their conditions and implement timely preventive interventions.

The ongoing screening initiative is a collaborative effort between BBCI Guwahati, the State Cancer Society of Arunachal Pradesh (Naharlagun), and GTGH Ziro, with active support from the District Administration of Lower Subansiri and the Community Advisory Board of Ziro. The report distribution program was attended by Dr. Koj Jarbo, Medical Superintendent of GTGH, alongside other medical professionals, staff members, and hundreds of community participants.
This joint initiative marks a crucial step towards addressing the burden of gastric cancer in the region and promoting preventive healthcare through early detection and community involvement.
