Helping Hands on Tuesday expressed deep concern and sorrow over the deaths of two youths from Northeast India in Delhi while they were struggling to build a future and secure employment opportunities.
According to information shared by the organisation, one youth from Assam allegedly died by suicide, while another youth from Manipur reportedly suffered a heart attack. Both had reportedly travelled to Delhi in search of livelihood and better opportunities.
The mortal remains of the Manipuri youth were sent back home in a coffin, while the last rites of the Assamese youth were conducted at the Green Park cremation ground in South Delhi. Helping Hands stated that despite efforts to reach out to members of the Assamese community in Delhi, no one reportedly came forward to assist with the final rites. Eventually, a Helping Hands volunteer along with a police personnel carried out the cremation.
The organisation further informed that volunteers facilitated overnight arrangements to ensure the safe transportation of the Manipuri youth’s body to Imphal. One of the deceased youths was reportedly engaged in a small job in Delhi, while the other had come to the city along with his younger sister in search of work.
In a reflective note, Robin Hibu highlighted the growing migration of youths from the Northeastern states to metropolitan cities in search of employment and survival. He expressed concern over the hardships many young people face during this struggle and questioned whether sufficient opportunities are available for youths within the eight Northeastern states themselves.
