A 56-year-old man, identified as Phassang Niya, was arrested in Banderdewa on Wednesday evening after allegedly attacking two people with a machete. The incident occurred at a fish market when Niya demanded 3 kg of fish on credit, which was refused by the shopkeepers.
In response, Niya reportedly pulled out a machete and attacked Arun Hazarika and Utpal Das, the shop owner. Hazarika sustained serious injuries to his forehead, while Das suffered wounds to his ribs.
Both victims are currently receiving treatment at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun.
Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo confirmed the arrest and stated that the law and order situation remains under control. He further mentioned that he is coordinating with his Lakhimpur counterpart to maintain peace and tranquillity in both states.
Niya, a resident of Pallang Village in Kurung Kumey district, has been charged under Section 118(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons.
