In a deeply distressing incident, a Class 11 student from Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh, was brutally assaulted by a group of Class 12 seniors at Miles Bronson Residential School in Azara, Guwahati. The student, who sustained serious head and facial injuries, is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU of a private hospital in Guwahati. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly among student unions representing the Apatani community.
Reacting to the news, the President of the All Apatani Students’ Union expressed deep concern and confirmed that he has communicated with the victim’s parents. He added that the Apatani Students’ Union Guwahati (ASUG) has been directed to coordinate closely with the family. “The boy is in a better condition now. We’re hoping for a speedy recovery. I have assured the parents of all possible assistance and will continue to provide support as needed,” the president stated.
Meanwhile, the All Lower Subansiri District Students’ Union (ALSDSU) has strongly condemned the incident, labelling it as a barbaric and unlawful act. “We immediately contacted the Assistant Resident Commissioner in Guwahati and requested urgent medical and legal assistance for the victim,” said Niting Taku, Assistant General Secretary of ALSDSU. The commissioner has assured full cooperation and necessary support.
ALSDSU affirmed its unwavering solidarity with the victim and his family, promising to monitor the case closely and push for appropriate legal action against those responsible. The union has urged authorities to ensure justice is delivered swiftly and such acts are not repeated in the future.
Joining the call for justice, the Arunachal Women and Youth Awareness Zone (AWAZ), led by President Dr. Subu Tasso Kampu, has demanded an immediate and thorough enquiry into the incident. “It is deeply troubling that such a heinous act could happen in the name of ragging, especially when ragging has been strictly banned. How could the school authorities be unaware of this? We demand a fact-finding investigation and immediate intervention from the Hon’ble Chief Ministers of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, Sri Pema Khandu and Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the Hon’ble Home Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Sri Mama Natung,” said Dr. Kampu.
With multiple organizations demanding justice and intervention at the highest levels, there is growing pressure on school authorities and state administrations to act swiftly and ensure accountability.
