Residents of Riew, Geku, and Boleng villages demonstrated at Parong

Date:

Residents of Riew, Geku, and Boleng villages, affected by the proposed dam, held a large demonstration in Parong village on 16th December 2024, one of the three project sites along the Siang river, with the slogan ‘No Dam, No Survey’.

Activists and local residents have consistently opposed the proposed dam, primarily due to concerns about displacement and the potential environmental impact of the large-scale project.

Arunachal Pradesh’s Siang district is preparing to receive Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to commence Pre-Feasibility Report survey operations for the proposed 11,000 megawatt Upper Siang hydropower project, which has encountered persistent opposition on the ground.

This consensus marks a significant milestone, reflecting the collective commitment of the local leadership to proceed with the project. The representatives have “resolved to expedite the construction of the project,” underscoring their determination to overcome any obstacles and expedite the implementation process.

The project’s advancement is crucial for the region’s development, promising to bring economic growth, infrastructure improvement, and job opportunities for the local population. The unified support from the district representatives underscores the importance of collaboration and shared vision in driving such large-scale initiatives.

The meeting also provided a platform for discussing the project’s broader impact on the community. The leaders emphasized the potential benefits, such as improved connectivity, enhanced quality of life, and increased investment in the area. By expediting the construction, the authorities aim to deliver these benefits to the residents as swiftly as possible.
