TSMC showcases next-gen chip tech for Apple, may feature in iPhone 17 Pro in 2025

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly demonstrated its first-ever prototype of 2nm chips to Apple. According to a report by Financial Times, these chips are expected to be introduced in 2025 with the iPhone 17 Pro lineup. The report also notes that Apple is closely aligned with TSMC in the race to develop and implement the 2nm chip technology. The next-gen technology is expected to surpass the current 3nm chips (which powers the latest iPhone 15 Pro models) and its associated nodes to deliver improved transistor density, performance and efficiency.

The upcoming 2nm chips are expected to be an integral part in the development of Apple silicon chips which are likely to be released in the coming years. These chips will also be able to power next-generation data centers and artificial intelligence technology. As plans for upcoming chips begin to solidify, TSMC has already showcased the test results for its "N2" 2nm prototype chips to Apple and other key clients.

How Apple is helping TSMC in its race against Samsung, Intel to develop 2nm chips
Another DigiTimes report claimed that Apple is a key player in TSMC's battle against Samsung and Intel to bring 2nm chips to market. The close relationship between Apple and TSMC also doesn’t seem to be affected after the chip designer claimed the iPhone maker was its ‘lowest-paying’ customer. The report also claims that Apple has no plans to reduce its ‌3nm‌ or 2nm chip orders from TSMC before 2027 at the earliest.

Apple also became the first company to utilise TSMC's ‌3nm ‌ technology in the A17 Pro chip that powers the iPhone 15 Pro and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max smartphones. The tech giant is expected to follow suit with the chip maker's N2 chips. TSMC's production of 2nm chips is likely to start in 2025. Chips based on this architecture are expected to appear first in Apple devices soon after.
