 What it means for users

US-based gaming company Electronic Arts (EA) has shut down online services for seven of its games. This includes popular titles like Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Dead Space 2. Apart from these two games, the online experience of the other games that EA has shut down includes -- Crysis 3, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Battlefield Bad Company, Battlefield 1943, and Dante’s Inferno.

This move not only marks the end of the online experiences of these titles but also removes these games from digital storefronts which will make them unavailable for purchase. Several online games have gone through a decline in player bases over time. But the latest shutdown will affect the fans of these popular titles.

Four of these games, including Battlefield Bad Company 2 and Dead Space 2, were still available on PC until EA closed its online service. It is also important for players to note that some of these games can no longer be purchased on digital storefronts either.

How the shutdowns are affecting users
According to a report by OPP. The impact of the shutdown has affected the dedicated communities that formed around these games. For example, players of Dead Space 2 organized play sessions and created a sense of friendship in the multiplayer aspect of the game. The Necroposting Discord group for Dead Space 2 even came together to celebrate their shared experiences and document their final moments playing online.

Another Reddit user shared a video of the last seconds of a Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam match. In this match, the gameplay abruptly cuts to black and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son” starts playing. This video has captured the nostalgia that comes with the end of an online gaming era.

In 2023, these games reportedly didn’t have thriving player bases and this might be the reason for EA to end their online services. The shutdown also acts as a reminder of the impermanence of online gaming experiences.
