Guwahati, 16th April: A patrol unit consisting of three vehicles from the Assam Rifles was ambushed by unidentified assailants today in the Tinsukia district of Assam, resulting in gunshot injuries to one member of the security forces. The ambush took place near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary, as the convoy was en route from Changlang in Arunachal Pradesh to Margherita in Assam. In a statement, the Assam Rifles reported that their personnel successfully counteracted the assailants, disrupting the planned assault. One soldier was injured during the skirmish and has been evacuated to the Military Hospital in Jorhat, where he is said to be in stable condition. The United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) has claimed responsibility for the engagement with the 31st regiment of the Assam Rifles near Namdang in Margherita. According to a police spokesperson, militant factions frequently cross into Indian territory via Arunachal Pradesh to carry out such disruptive operations. The region’s challenging terrain, abutting the borders of Myanmar and China, provides cover for militants to infiltrate India unnoticed. At this stage, law enforcement officials are unable to conclusively determine which militant groups orchestrated the attack, pending a comprehensive investigation. Following the incident, security forces have launched a coordinated search operation across Tinsukia and surrounding areas to locate and apprehend the perpetrators.
